RetirementCalc401k is a free, independent calculator that projects your 401k balance at retirement based on your current savings, contribution rate, employer match, and expected investment growth.
The tool runs a year-by-year, month-by-month compounding simulation: your existing balance and future contributions (yours plus employer match, capped at the IRS 2025 elective deferral limit of $23,500) grow at your chosen expected annual return, with your salary increasing each year at the raise rate you set. At retirement, it applies the widely used "4% rule" to estimate a sustainable monthly withdrawal, and separately shows the inflation-adjusted (real dollar) value of your projected balance. The 2025 contribution limits shown come directly from IRS Revenue Procedure 2024-25.
This is a simplified educational projection, not a financial plan. It assumes a constant rate of return every year, which real markets never deliver — actual returns are volatile and sequence-of-returns risk (poor returns early in retirement) can meaningfully change outcomes that a flat-rate model can't capture. It also doesn't account for vesting schedules, plan fees, taxes on withdrawal, Social Security, or other retirement income sources. This tool does not constitute financial, tax, or investment advice — for a real retirement plan, consult a licensed financial advisor, ideally a fee-only fiduciary.
